October, India, Holidays!

The month of October looks promising... in India.
If knowing when you had holidays was important when you were a student; when you enter the workforce, it becomes even more important!
October 2013 is gifting us with three holidays:

1. Gandhi Jayanti (birth) the 3rd (celebration for all the Indians),
2. Dusshera the 14th (celebration for the hindues specially),
3. Eid the 16th (for muslims).

And starting november has:

1. Kannada Rajyotsava (Karnatka formation day).
2. Diwali the 4th (lights festival for goddess Laxmi).

In the picture, you can see a reminder in the office of the Ganesh Chaturthi holiday (9th September).

El mes de octubre promete... en la India.
Si durante la epoca estudiantil controlar que dias tenias vacaciones era transcendental, durante la vida laboral creo que es mucho mayor.
Octubre 2013 nos regala tres festivos:

1. Gandhi Jayanti (nacimiento) el 3 (celebracion para todos los indios),
2. Dusshera el 14 (celebracion de los hindues sobre todo),
3. Eid (para los musulmanes) el 16.

Y principios de noviembre:

1. Kannada Rajyotsava (dia de la formacion del estado de Karnatka).
2. Diwali el 4 (el festivo de las luces por la diosa Laxmi).

Chai or Coffee, Madam?

Chai is very common in India. In small offices are “chaiwala” (the chai guy) who comes morning and afternoon. The poor "chaiwala" doesnt know what to prepare me as I keep changing my order, that's why he keeps asking: "Chai or Coffee?". Or sometimes he doesn't ask and directly serves me chai.
One of the best chais I have had in Bangalore was in HBR Layout, in Pani Kum Chai (Water Less Chai), a where you have to drink it while standing in the street.

Chai es muy típico en la India. En las pequenias oficinas suele haber un “chaiwala” (el chico del chai) que se pasa por la mañana y por la tarde. El pobre "chaiwala" conmigo no sabe que me tiene que prepara, pues cada dia le cambio la orden, y por ello me pregunta: "Chai or Coffee?". O a veces no pregunta y me ofrece directamente chai.
Uno de los mejores sitios en que he tomado chai en Bangalore era en la zona de HBR Layout, en Pani Kum Chai (Poca Agua Té), un chiringuito en plena calle y donde se toma de pie.

Chai es molt comu a la India. En els petites oficines estan els "chaiwalas" que es passa tant pel mati com per la tarda. El pobre "chaiwala" no sap que demanare, doncs cada dia li canvio l'ordre, i per aixo segueix preguntant-me: "Chai or Coffee?". O alguns cops no pregunta y m'ofereix chai.
Un dels millors llocs en els que he pres chai a Bangalores es en la zona de HBR Layout, en Pani Kum Chai (Poca Agua Te), un lloc en ple carrer i on es pren de peu.

Snacks? Today Kachoris

Having to stay for late work has one positive side: the man who sells homemade samosas and kachoris to the offices in the building.

Simply explained, kachoris are made of a soft dough of flour, water and bicharbonate and later mixed with fried grinned daal (lentils), ginger, green chillis, cashewnuts and other species. The result is an heraldry texture, which you decorate with chopped onions, carrots and thin crunchy sticks.

Tener que quedarte en el trabajo unas horas mas a tu horario diario tiene un punto positivo: el hombre que vende samosas y kachoris caserasos a las oficinas del edificio.

Rapidamente explicado, los kachoris consisten en una masa de harina, agua y bicarbonto, y posteriormente mezclado con sofrito de lentejas molidas, jengibre, picante verde, anacardos y otras especies. La mezcla resulta en una textura hojaldrada, y que decoras con ralladura de zanahoria, cebolla y unos finos palitos amarillos y crujientes, como se aprecia en la foto.

Rain rain please go away!

• Night rains leaving traces in the road. The ride in the auto was like being in an amusement park
• Las intensas lluvias de cada noche dejando rastro en la carretera. El trayecto en el auto era como estar en la montania rusa.
• Les plujes de cada nit deixant rastre en la carretera. El trajecte en auto era igual que haver pujat a la muntanya russa.

You want a pure silk sari?

The other day at office one of the collegues brought handmade pure silk saris from one of his friend's business. The sari's where very pretty, colorful and very Indian. Can't wait when the occasion comes to wear a sari, maybe a simplier one from showed in the photo. I could even wear it at work, as it's considered a formal attire.

El otro dia en la oficina uno de los companieros trajo saris de seda pura y hechos a mano del negocio de un amigo. Los saris era de colores vistosos y con estampados muy indios. No puedo esperar la ocasion en que tenga excusa para comprar y ponerme uno, quizas un poco mas simple a los mostrados en la sala de meetings de la oficina. Podria ir a trabajar con uno, pues el sari es considerado una vestimenta formal.

L'altre dia a l'oficina un dels companys de treball va portar saris de seda pura i fets a ma del negoci d'un amic seu. Els saris eren de colors vistos i amb dibuixos indis. No puc esperar el moment en que tingui excusa per comprar i posar-me'n un, potser una mic mes simple que els mostrats en la sala de meetings de l'oficina. Podria anar a treballar amb un d'ells, doncs el sari es considera una vestimenta formal.

Southern or northern food?

In India, specially in the south of India, local restaurants divide their food between southern and northern food. The thali (round metal plate) that is in the front is southern food and the thali at the back is from the north.

Various restaurants dont serve meat, the reason behind it is that in the south of India most are vegetarian. That doesn't mean you wont be having chicken in a week!

There is such a variety in the southern meals that I dont know where I would start. As for now, the round breads which are empty from inside are called Puris, and you can even have them for breakfast. Actually, they have midday and night meals for breakfast, there is no difference like in the european or american cuisine. Puris remind me a lot to the spanish "churros", without having that much sugar or being so thick.

In the thali, besides the bread, they serve you two different kinds of rice, several vegetables (with their thousand and one spices and chillies!) and curd is served, besides the bread and the dessert. All of this, in a single Thali!

En la India, sobre todo en el sur de la India, los restaurantes locales dividen el menu en comida del sur o del norte. El primer thali (plato redondo y metalico) de la foto es del sur, y el thali en segundo plano es del norte. Existen muchos restaurantes que no serviran carne, pues el sur de la India se conoce por ser vegetarianos, ello no quiere decir que no vayas a probar pollo durante semanas.

Existe tal variedad de comidas y panes en el sur de la India que no sabria por donde empezar. Por ahora, los panes redondos y llenos de aire que se encuentran en la foto se llaman Puris y hasta puedes tenerlos para desayunar. Es mas, es normal tomar para desayunar las comidas del mediodia o de la noche, no existen los desayunos estilos europeos. Los puris me recuerdan mucho a los churros pero sin azucar ni la consistencia del tipico churro madrileno.

En el thali, a parte del pan, sirven dos tipos de arroz, y una variedad de verduras con sus mil y una especies, asi como elcurd (asi llaman al yogur) y el postre. Todo en un Thali!
